My EEExperience Part I

I've decided to get myself a Asus EEE. This is the first part of my story.

The EEE hasn't come to Norway yet, and I am waiting for that. I think it's a little half baked to have a PC without the Norwegian special characters on.

I've wanted the EEE since it first was launched. First it was the 701, but then the 900 came with 1024x600 resolution - a much better option if it wasn't too expensive. The width of 1024 pixels is quite important - web pages are mostly written to fit that and word processors are shown best in that resolution too. Even so, I was a bit reluctant to get the 900 in stead of the 701. The 701 was «The original EEE». Besides, it was probably much more expensive.

Then the Atom-based EEE came (not in Norway, but it will late autumn 2008), but i didn't even consider waiting that one - it's not in the correct segment, since it is $100 (or there about) more expensive than the others. It will probably be much more expensive in Norway too.

Come June there was no EEE Laptot (ref: El Reg) yet, but first pre-ordering for the 701 started. Cost NOK 2550 (€319/$510). I could live with that, but I would like to see how much they'd want for the 900.

A while later they did start pre-ordering on the 900 at NOK 2590 (€324/$518). The price difference was negligible (NOK 40/€5/$8). The Norwegian version of the EEE 900 comes with 16GB SSD and Linux. So, 900 it will be!

This is my home network before the EEE-era:

A Linux server in the basement.
A Windows desktop so the kids can play the CDs they get on Mac Donald and with magazines
My own Laptop, a Zepto 2415W, 1,73 Ghz M-processor 2 GB RAM and 80 GB HDD, running Ubuntu Linux

Now, I did a little fine thinking and came to the following conclusions:

  • I wanted the 900 over the 701.
  • My two daughters (8 and 10 years old) also wanted one, and it would be a good idea to get them one each, for learning purposes. I really think that we are in the process of getting a society with two kind of people. Those who know computers and those who don't. I'd rather have my kids in the first group.
  • I need only one laptop, and it might as well be the 900.

I did a little reading on the net to see if I can live with a EEE only. The only problem I found is that people who write touch think the keyboard is a bit small. I can't do touch, so it doesn't apply to me!

So how far have I got by now?

I have ordered three EEE 900 that's due to ship at 09.07.2008 (not confirmed).
The kids are using money that I have saved to them to buy theirs and I've sold my Zepto. Right now I have only the Windows desktop. That PC will stay put there. It will mainly be used as a game machine, since Windows do that quite well, and for synchronizing my Nokia phone until I find a better way (on the EEE).

Plans:
  • The windows PC will stay where it is - As soon as the EEEs arrive, I will reformat it so it'll run as smooth as possible.
  • The kids will finally have their own PC and I will use some time on training them in both Linux and the applications.
  • My 900 will probably be tested with a few OS-es. I'll write about it.
  • I will keep the original OS on my kids laptots until they are comfortable with it. Then I might set it to «advanced» or change OS all together for them - we'll see.

Part 2 will be written a few days after the EEEs have arrived.
