Ubuntu day one.

I've been using Kubuntu a while now. I was quite satisfied with it, but still I wanted to check out Ubuntu.

The reasons for that are twofold:
  • I've never run Gnome.
Well, I've tried it a few years ago, but it was quite crude. I'd like to find out if it had improved.
  • Linus Torvalds says to use KDE.
It's true - he's said in a newsgroup that it's best to stear clear of Gnome and use KDE in stead.
I'd like to make my own opinion on that, thankyouverymuch.

Preparing

Kubuntu had issues in installing codecs and some tools I need to make my machine a multimedia desktop.
Another problem I had, was that when I installed OpenOffice 2.0 Final, it froze when saving - not much of a productivity tool then, huh?

It was important for me to get at least theese two problems solved - the codecs and OOo 2.0 Final that could save files(!), so I searched the net for something that could help me and found EasyBreezy. It installs all the codecs I need, OOo 2.0 Final and all the multimedia tools I'd ever need. It can also install Bittorrent (which I did) and file sharing (emule and gnutella). I don't need file sharing.

Installing

I started installing about 19:30, and used the same partitons as I'd used for Kubuntu until now. I left the WinXP intact, so I could dual boot. I need Windows from time to time at work.

The install worked flawlessly, and I logged into Gnome. Not bad - not bad at all. In the sys-tray a ticker told me that I needed to update some applications, so I did. It was very intuitive, and I started to believe that this distro could live on my laptop for a while.

After updating, I went on to install and run EasyBreezy. That too ran OK and installed itself under "Applications -> System". Running it from there, I installed the options I wanted. It just worked.

I was allmost done setting it up. Lacked two things only:

Printer
That one gave me no problems. The printer is attached to my wifes Windows computer - it's a HP pcs750. It was "Add new printer", telling it that I wanted to install a network printer on a windows machine. Then I'd add machine name (or IP), username and password. That was it!

Looks
To be honest, I think the default theme of Ubuntu is... how shall I say it?... well, ugly! Luckily Ubuntu comes with several different themes, so I just found one I liked and changed.
Had to change the background picture too, and found one at NASA that I liked and use now.

Now, there was one more thing. When using KDE I used Kate editor to program PHP, BASH and more. I like highlighting and sometimes I wor directly on the server. With Kate both is implemented in a good way. I'm still looking for a good replacement, but that'll come soon enough. I'll keep you updated.

That was all - Really!

Getting used to it

Now I had a fully working OS with all wistles and bells - in two hours. It's time to get used to it. Noticing one problem, quite fast.
I had problems connecting to the shares on my wifes computer. I'll look into that an come back with an update. I've found the applet, but I am having problems with the actual connection.

Other than that? Nothing. It just work as far as I can see right now. I'll come back with an update in a day or two.
